Thermochromic materials change colour reversibly when crossing a preset temperature. They have been used for some time on a wide range of products, for example on beer bottles as chill indicators, on novelty mugs or glasses and baby spoons as a safety feature.

The inks are colored below the threshold and clear above. For more details on the mechanisms and behaviors of reversible thermochromics, consult the  How it works section. 
The color-changing element is a microencapsulated composition. Available transitions range from 3°C to 65°C, in 7 colors. Check our  available colors  and  temperatures  pages for details.

The ThermaSOLV capsule is specifically designed for high resistance to a variety of ink vehicles and harsh environments. As a result, most inks have 12 months minimum shelf life. Maximum latitude in formulation afforded by the capsule robustness allows for inks with excellent printing characteristics and optimized resistance properties for their final application.

AiC is offering in standard a complete series of dedicated, fully tested inks such as (but not limited to):

•   Water-based flexo/gravure inks for paper labels, paper towels, beer labels (requiring
       no overvarnish), plastic labels, shrink sleeve, and polyethylene film.
  
•   S/B screen inks for glass & ceramic, polyolefin containers.
  
•   UV screen inks for paper & plastic labels, polyolefin containers, laminated PVC
       cards.

Classic reversible thermochromics have been commonly used as authentication devices on restaurant tickets, pre-paid phone cards, and store coupons or  to prevent color copying of sensitive documents. But access to these inks has become too easy for dedicated counterfeiters.
SEREND is a line of inks with very particular color-changing characteristics, designed for instant verification of authenticity at point of trade, representing a very attractive, more secure alternative to thermochromics. They feature impossible to match color transitions, memory effects, dual activation mechanisms and more… All inks are activated by human hands or readily accessible objects.
