The Matrix is an overall strategy for the Coldset Division of Sun Chemical Europe.  It combines all aspects of the business including:
  • Quality
  • Training
  • Consumables
  • Supply Chain Management
  • The concept of adopting Euro Standards is not new, but the way of identifying the market requirements is.  The Matrix gives a logical method to identify the major group of Inks we provide.  The objectives for the new systems are as follows:
    • To identify the exact market needs
    • To control the product range for the future
    • To encourage technical improvement of the products
    • To match the latest IFRA & International Colour Standard
  • The Matrix range is specifically designed to give optimised print quality for individual press requirements.
    • The innovative vehicle technology at the heart of the system demonstrates exceptional lithographic characteristics, allowing the printer to achieve stable ink/water balance quickly for optimum transfer, giving good quality, smooth solids on a wider range of different grammage newsprint stocks.
    • The excellent rub resistance and setting properties of the Matrix range complement the smooth running of the press and it has been formulated to give minimal set-off through post press and inserting equipment.
    • Inks. In four colour process printing, it is important to maintain complete control over all the different aspects of the process.  This should result in brighter cleaner copies, for instance, a wider colour gamut is achievable with flushed pigment, but this will be lost if separations and prepress are not under good control.  Similarly if ink density is not controlled within specific limits, higher levels of set off will result and if wet on wet trapping is poor because of poor ink/water balance, the colour gamut will be reduced and the overall result will be a less than acceptable copy.
    • The Matrix Ink Range has been specifically developed to incorporate the latest flushed pigment technology, advanced vehicle formulations, ink/water balance and complementary ink strengths to optimize trapping and transfer characteristics of the ink.  The result is a cleaner sharper reproduction, with minimal ink lay down and the associated advantages this gives.
  • Product Range
    • 3 major areas impact on the Coldset range:
      • Rheology
      • Press performance
      • Print quality
    • Each of these areas affect each offer:

Rheology is critical to the production, especially the pumping and delivering of the ink, but of course it also affects the printer in terms of duct performance and pumping to the press.  Rheology also affects the print quality for the publisher, by impacting on linting, dot gain and trapping.  This interaction happens in all three areas, and only when they are all satisfied, do we achieve the ideal ink within an ink range.
  • This gives us inks designed and formulated to the market needs; it gives us control of the product range from the point of view of technical improvement and quality control.
  • The market requirements are addressed by zoning the inks by end use performance, which is the way our customer’s presses and needs are identified.
  • By the use of The Matrix, we will control the formulation and development of these inks.
  • The range and identified requirements mean that the development of these ink ranges is an ongoing task. This development program is a constant issue in the Laboratories to hone the products for Quality and Performance.

The Coldset Matrix serves to determine each client's specific demands and at the same time always takes into account other important parameters. From this, the identification of the ideal printing ink, printing auxiliaries and services for this specific case are reached. In addition, Sun Chemical's Coldset Matrix offers even more: it represents a permanent partnership and service at the same time as continuously optimising both products and processes.
