SOCMA Names Sun Chemical’s Muskegon Plant Winner of 2004 Responsible Care Achievement Award

Cincinnati, OH - November 19, 2004 -- The Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers’ Association (SOCMA) has awarded the 2004 Responsible Care® Achievement Award to Sun Chemical Performance Pigments’ manufacturing facility in Muskegon, MI. The award is given each year to manufacturing sites across the country that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to protecting human health and the environment. Responsible Care® is a voluntary initiative within the chemical industry that supports continual improvement in environmental, health, safety, and security performance.

“Sun Chemical Performance Pigments’ Muskegon facility has put a tremendous amount of effort into improving its performance in environmental, health and safety management,” said Eldon Fink, Sun Chemical Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Regulatory. “As a result, we have improved our EHS performance trends, which translates into a measurable, positive impact on our people and our business. We
are proud of these accomplishments and grateful to SOCMA for this award.”

Throughout 2004, Sun Chemical’s Muskegon pigment plant has modeled what CEO Wes Lucas calls the “Four Key Initiatives”: Safety; Customer Value System; Productivity and Six Sigma; and People Development. The plant received SunCare® certification through Sun Chemical’s internal awareness program that emphasizes compliance with and improvement in the environment, health, safety, and security of its employees, customers and community. In addition, the facility obtained ISO 14001 certification from the company’s quality registrar QMI.

Sun Chemical will accept the award this year at SOCMA’s 83rd Annual Dinner in New York City.
