Sun Chemical and KBA Press Ahead with Waterless Inks

Amsterdam, Holland - October 10, 2006 --  KBA and Sun Chemical are celebrating the success of Shark™ waterless inks at KBA's Cortina installations, which include newspaper plants at Rodi in Holland, Roettgerodt in Germany, Persgoep in Belgium and Bussigny in Switzerland.  Shark's performance represents a success for the two companies' joint commercial venture to develop water-washable inks for KBA's Cortina waterless web offset newspaper press.

The successful link-up has been part of a joint drive to enhance press ecology, cost-efficiency and print quality by standardising the production workflow, cutting paper consumption and reducing emissions.

Sun Chemical's new Shark™ ink can be washed off the press with water, without requiring chemicals or other additives.

It has been run successfully on the Cortina press, even at maximum speed, with no deterioration in print quality due to piling. The ink also dramatically reduces VOC emissions in the printing process.

Since the agreement was signed, Sun Chemical and KBA have continuously exchanged information in regular technical meetings as part of the commercial development process for Shark™ ink and the Cortina press.

Steve Lilley, Sun Chemical's European coldset product director, said: "There has been tremendous interest in fount-free printing because of the obvious benefits to printers wanting to remove the dampening system from their presses. These include enhancing print quality, easier press operation and reduced waste.

"We are delighted with the successful trial at the new installation at Persgoep in Belgium. We look forward to continuing to further develop inks that benefits printers," he said.

KBA's marketing director, Klaus Schmidt, said: "We are pleased with the success of the joint project with Sun Chemical. Both companies have learnt a lot from the partnership, which has involved using the inks on most of the seven Cortina press lines already in operation."
